Freezing Crab Cakes

I have several cans of crab meat about to reach the expiration date. Can I make crab cakes (cooked/uncooked?) and then freeze them for future meals? I have purchased frozen crab cakes from an 'oldtimer' in Chincoteague and always found them to be pretty good.

Crab-O-Licious.com Replies-Sure! Making crab cakes and freezing them for future use to use up your soon-to-expire cans of crab is great idea! If you cook them first, then freeze them, they should stay good frozen for up to 4-6 months.

If you don't cook them before you freeze the crab cakes, you'll want to get them out and cook them up sooner, like, 2-3 months tops.

Tip for freezing crab cakes: Use wax paper in between the each crab cake, so they won't stick together when they freeze! Enjoy those crab cakes!

Cook Crab Cakes Today Eat Tomorrow?

I am preparing crab cakes for an appetizer for a large event tomorrow. Can I cook them today, refrigerate them, and then warm them up in the oven tomorrow before I serve them? Can I cook them today and then warm them up before serving them tomorrow?

Crab-O-Licious.com Replies-Absolutely! Especially being a large event and having to make so many crab cakes. That is exactly what we would do.

After cooking the crab cakes, though, you really want to make sure that they are cooled down at room temperature before safe-keeping them in the refrigerator overnight. (Don't bother with freezing them if you are serving them tomorrow.)This will help them not to stick to each other while they are being stored.

What we would do is layer them in a plastic cake holder or like container and place wax paper in between the layers of cooked crab cakes.

Hope this helps! And, have a wonderful event and enjoy those crab cakes!

Freezing homemade crab cakes from previously frozen crab

I purchased pasteurized crab meat in a can. I opened it and used some. The rest I froze. Today I made homemade crab cakes with some that I had frozen. Can I refridgerate or freeze the leftover crab cakes?

Crab-O-Licious.com Replies-Go ahead, we do this all the time with crab meat (regular/fresh/previously frozen). Just make sure have thoroughly cooked the crab cakes and you cool the cakes back down and package them properly before putting them in the freezer! Enjoy!

Freezing Crab Cakes

How long can you keep pre-cooked crab cakes in the freezer?

Crab-O-Licious.com Replies-You can keep pre-cooked crab cakes in the freezer for 4 to 6 months, given they are packaged properly for storing in the freezer. We highly recommend making extra cakes for future use. This method comes in handy when you are strapped for time.
