Types of CrabThere are many types of crab that you can catch, clean, cook and eat. If you love crab, but don't know much about them nor the difference of the various types, you'll find these pages interesting, also with some great tips and crab facts. You can click in to each one to find more information about each type, view pictures and find where their respective habitat's are and crab season's.Alaskan King Crab is properly named as it is the biggest crab in the world and the most dangerous crab to catch and probably the most favorable of all the other types of crab. Alaskan Snow Crab is, too, very large, compared to Blue Crab and Dungeness, however, not as large as the King Crab. Blue Crab are a high demand, new-found delicacy in the U.S. and are uniquely favored for good reason. Unlike the Red Rock or Dungeness crabs, the blue crab is also eaten in its soft shell state. Transporting these crabs and caring for them can be a challenge. We will help you in this challenge, if you are dealing with Live Crabs. Dungeness Crab is probably the most abundant crab you will find in the western part of the states. Most abundant, and, second best only to King Crab! Red Rock Crab are not as commercially sought after because of their thick and hard to break shell, as their cousins, the Dungeness Crab, are. However, they are good eating, but are a much smaller type of crab offering not as much meat. The Chinese Mitten Crab are interesting creatures. These types of crab are known for their mitten-like, hairy claws. They could also be known as the "gangsta's of crab," in our opinion, with their bullying and aggressive habits. With all this aside, they are also a much prized delicacy.
Male and Female Crabs
In the photo, the male crab is on the left and the female crab is on the right. Female Crabs abdomen or tail is very wide and covers part of each basal leg segment. The embryos are wider under the tail on the adult crabs. Male Crabs have triangular shaped tails which are only one third the size of females and much narrower. Here, at Crab-O-Licious.com, we demonstrate how to catch crab, clean and cook with these various kinds of crab and offer free crab meat recipes for you to enjoy with these types of crab.
